Frame Relay, also known as "Fractional T1",
is one way to provision a dedicated data circuit. Frame Relay is an older technology, and
is generally slower and more expensive than DSL.
Frame Relay does have its advantages.
For example, we can provision Frame Relay almost anywhere, including areas that are too
far away from the Telco Central Office for DSL, or are served out of a central office that
is not equipped to provision DSL. Frame-Relay speeds range from 56 Kbps to 384 Kbps.
In the last few years T1 prices have dropped to the point where almost no new
Frame-Relay circuits are installed for Internet access, but they are still widely used for
the creation of private networks.
