DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service utilizes the
existing copper wires from your telephone lines to carry data into your facility.
Even though other local exchange carriers have announced intentions to provide DSL
circuits, currently Verizon is the only carrier with which we have aligned that has the
infrastructure in place to provide them. In the implementation of DSL that we use,
the data is "piggybacked" onto a standard telephone line and is separated from
the line after it enters your building. The DSL does not impede the normal use of
the telephone line, and you can continue to make and receive calls on the same telephone
line while simultaneously maintaining a data connection without one interfering with the
other. We commonly place these circuits on your existing fax line. We utilize
these circuits to connect your building to our private metropolitan area network over
which we provide you with Internet access. DSL lines can be provisioned for a wide range
of speeds, from 384 KB to 7.1 MB download speeds, and from 128 KB to 768 KB upload speeds.
DSL installation costs can vary from company to company because of the individual needs
of the customer. If a company has an experienced network technician and the
necessary network infrastructure we can ship a "Self Install" kit for DSL
circuits, otherwise our on-site rate for network services is $120/hour. The typical
lead-time from order to installation on a DSL circuit is 14 days.
A DSL circuit from SHEERConnection is not the same as a DSL circuit
from Verizon or another Internet service provider. While we rely on Verizon for the
"local loop" (the copper wire between the Verizon Central Office and your
facility), just as we would for a T1 or Frame Relay line, the Internet service is provided
via our own facilities.
The technology used to implement DSL circuits limits them to facilities that are within
16000 feet of the Verizon Central Office. In addition, the lines must be capable of being
conditioned to carry the data. If your telephone lines do not qualify for DSL
service, we have other options to provide you with access such as "Frame Relay"
and Microwave circuits, but they are much more expensive to install and support.
As with all of our Internet access circuits, DSL lines from Technology Specialists come
with static IP addresses and the ability to connect multiple machines to the Internet. |
